I’m a professional Russian” http://www.youtube.com/user/FPSRussia Call Of Duty Fan Film: Operation Kingfish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5H88NR9ERCU ***Dr. Greg’s Corner*** Hi, Matt, Joe, Kerr, If the moon were right "on top" of the earth (as when the Hulk was holding them a few feet apart), among other things, it would generate some **monstrous** tides -- the point between the two spheres would be deep underwater. I think the two spheres would also be squashed out of shape, and might flow together (pulled by gravity) to make a single larger object. A few feet of extra distance makes no difference to things like that. However, you can't expect totally correct physics in a comic book, right? ---------- You were talking recently about how to travel to a nearby star. (What should NASA do now that the space shuttle missions are finished?) Here is some rudimentary math. The nearest stars about about 4 light-years away, and there might be several in the 8-10 range or so. If you want to travel 10 light years in a conventional rocket-like vehicle, let's say we travel at 1/2 the speed of light (and 1/3 of the speed at which entertainment and technology collide!) Then we will make a round trip in 40 years. To get going that fast, we have to accelerate at 1g constantly for about *six months* -- compare that to airplanes, which accelerate at 1 (or a few) g for a matter of minutes. What's more, the rocket fuel we use later has to be accelerated by the rocket fuel we use earlier, as well as the vehicle itself. So the fuel used on the "return" trip has to be accelerated and then decelerated on the "away" trip, during which time it is just inert mass. If there were a refueling station at the other star, you wouldn't have to carry fuel for the whole round trip. The most efficient type of fuel (in conventional physics, at least) would be a mix of matter and antimatter. Combining them makes light, which you aim out the back. Then your back-stream departs at the speed of light, and gives you more forward momentum than a slower back-stream would. (Aside.) So why doesn't shining a flashlight behind you make a good rocket propulsion system? Yes, you are using light as propulsion, but most of the mass of the flashlight does not get converted into kinetic energy. So assume we can make matter + antimatter and store it in tanks as fuel. The above figuring means that we need about 5-10 times the mass of the vehicle (the payload) as fuel. (I kind of guessed there, possibly the actual number would be higher.) So a one-ton vehicle (the size of a car), would take 5-10 tons of matter/antimatter fuel. Remember that we will be living inside this car-sized interior for 40 years! I hope we don't get too bad a case of cabin fever.... Maybe you should bring along a deck of cards or something.... You can't play Starcraft 2 because you will lack an internet connection. Also, how much total energy is that? Suppose we can manufacture the matter/antimatter fuel with 100% efficiency. The world power use at present is in the low terawatts, but more than 1 TW. Let's divert 1 TW to make the fuel. At that rate, it would take (I think) some 3 years to manufacture the fuel, i.e. the energy content of the fuel equals 3 terawatt-years (compare the units to kilowatt-hours), plus or minus whatever errors I made. So even to make the fuel is a huge and slow effort. The above ignores relativity, and is not done carefully even so. Including relativity would make the numbers worse. So, it looks like a journey to another star would be, pretty much, more or less, surpassingly impossible -- at least on the basis I described above. To go that far, you have to either invent some way of going faster than light, or else a space-warp whereby distant regions of space become "neighbors" through a tunnel, or some such. But so far no one has done that. Efforts in that direction have been frowned upon, if not by Lady Luck, then certainly by the Ladies Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, both of whom appear to be in accord with each other in their distaste for faster-than-light anything. Maybe you could get to another planet. A trip to Jupiter would be a matter of several years, one way, assuming you settle for several miles/second of velocity. (Actually it's 3 years at 5 miles/sec, which is the velocity of the moon launches.) That is sort-of doable, but still seems like a pretty long trip. ---------- Some of the anticipations of sci-fi (say from the 1950's or whenever) have been borne out, or exceeded, by actual developments, but space and time travel have not been two of them. For an illustration, you can look at Richard Feynman. If anyone could have built a faster-than-light drive in their garage (or a university or military lab, for that matter) in the 1950's, you would think it would have been him. He understood fundamental physics as thoroughly and as intuitively as anyone. So why didn't he? Is it flat-out impossible? After the Manhattan project in WWII, Feynman and the rest of those people went into particle physics. The atomic-bomb development segued naturally into the particle accelerators, etc., partly because the machinery was similar -- and partly because the people involved had made contacts in the military and government during the Manhattan project, which they carried those over to become influential in U.S. science policy: they could relate science to defense, which made obtaining funding for steadily larger instruments a lot easier. Assuming that the war and the Manhattan project hadn't happened, I don't know if things would have gone much differently. Maybe people like Feynman would have gone into particle physics anyway, given what was known about physics and what machines were buildable. (You have to do something that you think might have a chance of success, and there was no obvious angle by which to begin developing faster-than-light travel. Imagine yourself standing at a workbench with the goal of building a drive for a spaceship. How are you going to go about it, what screws do you put in where? Obviously you need an idea first, and until then there's no point in fiddling around.) So, at the same time that the sci-fi writers were coming up with a hundred different ways that space travel might happen, the physics people were not thinking about that at all. See you, --Greg | |
